Buster Keaton – The General (1926)
This is a silent era film about a guy who needs to become a soldier in order to impress a girl. He has two loves. One is the girl. The other is “The General”. A locomotive. The General was a box office flop. It lost $700,000. This ended Keaton making his own films and forced him into a restrictive contract with MGM. Modern critics consider it to be one of the best movies ever made. I think it’s amazing that MGM would come up with a three quarter million dollar budget for a film in this time.
