The 39 Steps is a 1935 British thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the adventure novel The Thirty-nine Steps by John Buchan. The film stars Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

There have been four major film versions of the book. Hitchcock’s original has been the most acclaimed, and remains so today: In 1999 it came 4th in a BFI poll of British films, while in 2004 Total Film named it the 21st greatest British movie of all time.

I love the book, and hate the movie! Well, maybe hate is a little strong, but in the film, Hannay is hardly a gentleman. And there are no women in the original story.

Very good story, if u like spy stories. The interesting part to me w/these type of movies is not knowing who u can trust, that’s where the mystery comes in.
    hitchcock has done it again.

a real treat, hitchcock at his finest, scotland is not really as bleak at they make it out in black and white. You can also see where hitchcock was influenced for “North by Northwest”. Whoever selected this movie did an excellent job.

There are four versions of John Buchan’s story of 39 Steps. But others may not compared to the high standards of Hitchcok’s translation to screen. Great.

It’s weird. People either really like this movie or hate it. There doesn’t seem to be anyone on the fence.

    Retrovision:
I began watching online the 39Steps and was no more than 5minutes into it when it quit. Could you fix that? Thanks.
