Devil Bat, The (1940) People That Time Forgot, The (1977)

Beat the Devil (1953)

Tagged: , Comedy, Drama, Film Noir, Peter Lorre, by Kevin

There are only two public domain Bogart films that I am aware of. This is one of them and it’s a real gem. It was so good, I even digitally restored it, so watching it right here is going to be better than any print you will find (most of them are terrible). I am using a pretty high bitrate (500kbps), so pausing the film for a bit to let it load might help you if you’re internet speed is a little low

Beat the Devil This movie has not become a cult classic for nothing. Among its other merits, it is one of the few films where a film noir is mixed with a comedy. It’s a whose who of actors of it’s vintage and is directed by John Huston. It stars Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Robert Morley and Peter Lorre.

    Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the great version of “Beat the Devil”. Great old film and looks and plays great here on RETROVISION! With all the copyright laws that are broken by other sites offering gobbles of todays flicks,I still find a better movie here on RETROVISION many times. Kudos for running the best legal free movie site on the web! I just have to chime in every now and again to give you your props buddy. Helluva job,and I still always suggest RETROVISION to my friends. Peace.

Great movies from the past. But can only seem to load half of it – why? Tis not my computer, for it has memory for at lest three movies. Strange. Am I doing something wrong?

I can only think of one thing that might make it do that. Maybe you have some problem with the temporary files in your browser. Your browser will save the flash movie as a temp file and it may be only a partial file.

The solution is to clear the temp files. In firefox, that’s Tools—> Clear Private Data, then make sure “cache” is checked. IE6 has a similar mechanism, but I don’t feel like looking up the exact procedure. Look in the IE6 help files.

    Hi Kevin,

Cliff here, Thank you. Very much for your efforts. I would not know where to begin to say how much I for one, appriciate the work you put into saving these movies to digital format. Beat the Devil is a great old Bogart movie. Having seen it years ago at a Bogie film fest, and now having the chance to own it for free, well is wonderfull.

Know that you are appriciated and looked up to as a hero of sorts in my book. I know, I am gushing but it’s true. My wife and I don’t get out much and we look forward to sitting in bed with the laptop watching movies. Be it on DVD or streaming.

Again, keep up the good (albeit tedious) work.

    Thank you,

    Cliff

    What a great movie! Thanks.

Unfortunately, 78 mins in, the picture has frozen and there is a little rotating circle with the figure 1, in the centre of the screen.

I have tried clearing cache to no avail. It has been doing this for about 10 mins now.

I am running XP service pack 3 and Flash 10. Does anybody have any ideas how to fix this?

Sounds like a temporary internet hiccup. The file looks ok from here. I’d try it again later. I wiswh the internet was perfect, but no such luck.
