Chester Morris and Thelma Todd star in this 1931 film about a football coach who became a stock broker, but didn’t have the heart for stealing from widows and orphans. To ease his conscience, while still making a ton of money, he becomes a high seas pirate. This movie is loaded with 1931 witty banter. Thelma Todd plays the spoiled Wall Street heiress and siren.
Thelma Todd died in 1935 of carbon monoxide inhalation in her car inside the garage of Jewel Carmen, a former actress and former wife of Todd’s business partner Roland West. Was it suicide? Was it an accident? Was it her ex-husband or gangster Lucky Luciano? No one is sure, but it ended a career of 40 films in the late 20′s and 30′s.

FIXED
Are you sure about Thelma Todd being in this movie? She got no screen credits?
okay, now I realize Thelma Todd and Allison LLoyd are one in the same. Thanks. White Hot was not a bad movie at all. Loni Anderson was a pleasant surprise in her acting. Why Zasu Pitts was dropped from the history is a mystery
Yep. Thelma Todd took that alias because she wanted to be taken seriously. Her career before Corsair was Laurel and Hardy and Buster Keaton roles as the cute babe who gets chased in Keystone Cop style comedy. Corsair was a critical failure, but I think it’s a halfway decent film. This was early enough to be “pre-code” cinema. It doesn’t push the envelope with that very far.
I don’t think Zasu Pitts dropped from history. She had a pretty nice career before she died of cancer at age 69. Her last film, a week before she died, was It’s a Mad, Mad World.
