This is one of the best movies I’ve seen on retrovision. It is everything a suspenseful pirate movie ought to be and has a great (as usual) performance by Charles Laughton. I think I like it as well as Captain Kidd (which is also here).

Maureen O’Hara plays a great heroine.

Avast! Here’s a lovely piece of work!

A young woman of character walks straight into the crafty spider’s web. The viewer takes a semi-omniscient view of things and waits as the dark truths unknown to the heroine come to light. Like in all good pirate movies, there is murder, deceit, treachery, and undying greed, enough to throw in a good deal of subtle and complex challenges and suspense.

Piracy is an object of fear, curiosity, or even ambition, and this movie does not fail to pander to these motives, but a beautiful and innocent heroine stands out in the midst of it all like a glowing beacon, tossing violently in the tempest, but burning brightly and bravely, showing the way out of the darkness. With a well-spun plot and well-formed characters, this is the type of movie that every person should watch and enjoy at least once in their lives.

If you have time to spare on a weekend, watch it snuggly under a blanket with milk and cookies, and brave the storm with the lovely Maureen O’Hara!
