Walter Cronkite Passes Away at Age 92 Space Race Films – Apollo 11

John F. Kennedy Speech – Space Program (1962)

Tagged: , Educational, Space Films, by Kevin

John F. Kennedy lobbies Congress for a half a billion dollars that started the space program. That included the Apollo Mission to go to the moon and early weather and communications satellites. It mentions the Rover project which was to develop nuclear rockets for manned planetary space exploration. The B run of the Phoebus engine in February 1967 achieved 1500 MW for 30 minutes. The final 2A test in June 1968 ran for over 12 minutes at 4,000 MW, the most powerful nuclear reactor ever built. This research was canceled by Richard Nixon after the space race ended. Some competition between the “superpowers” persisted until the eastern bloc fell in 1989. Soviet interest was spurred by Reagans Stategic Defense initiative (Star Wars).
