What strikes me about these Gaumont movies, like the Alfred Hitchcock films here, is that the cinematography and story lines seem to be a lot more sophisticated than their American contemporaries. I wish the audio was a little better on this film, but it’s a good movie anyway.

Thanks, Kevin, for these wonderful old Sherlock Holmes movies ! The Speckled Band was brand new for me and Massey’s portrayal of Holmes seemed more sympathic than Rathbones coldly cerebral one -interesting contrast. The Sleeping Cardinal was also a first view. What a treasure trove ! Lost your website when my PC”s disk died – glad I finally found it again.
Best to Mom and puppy !

I really liked the Jeremy Brett Holmes TV shows too. They had a few over at Guba. I’ve been renting and buying some of the Basil Rathbone movies which aren’t public domain.
