The Cuban Missile Crisis was a confrontation between the United States of America, the Soviet Union, and Cuba during the Cold War. The Russians call it the “Caribbean Crisis,” while the Cubans call it the “October Crisis.” The crisis ranks with the Berlin Blockade as one of the major confrontations of the Cold War, and is often regarded as the moment in which the Cold War came closest to escalating into a nuclear war.
The climax period of the crisis began on October 14, 1962, when U.S. reconnaissance photographs taken by an American U-2 spy plane revealed missile bases being built in Cuba, and ended two weeks later on October 28, 1962, when U.S. President John F. Kennedy and the intercession of U.N. Secretary-General, U Thant, reached an agreement that Cuba was no threat toward the United States.

Thanks for reposting this. My father who,as you know, just passed away on Feb 23 and he was in the naval blockade of Cuba. I remember him many times recounting this and many other tales. Funny thing,he was aboard the USS Randolph and they were heading for a stop(suppoesedly)in Norfolk and Dad said that he went out to the deck in the wee hours of the morning and he noticed that it was suddenly getting warmer and warmer and he argued with shipmates that they were going south but they didnt believe him until they were told that they were,in fact, heading to Cuba as part of a Naval blockade. He had many cool stories and I really appreciate this little newsreel. A very scary time,my father told me over and over throughout the years “know one can ever know just how close we came to WWIII during that time”..whew. Well, keep up the good work..I will be seeing ya.
I never showed most of these newsreels before, and I never dubbed them together before so that you could watch them as sort of a “show”. This post contains several Castro newsreels and JFK talking about the Naval Blockade of Cuba in the 1960′s.
Thanks for the post and for the site. I know that I always say the same thing but at a very trying time in my life a couple of years ago(approximately)I was very depressed and just surfing the web,I came across Retrovision and for hours I was entertained and thought I was in heaven with all the old movies, sitcoms etc. I had shared this site with my father and also had my young nephew to get interested in some of the “good ole days” of television viewing. Now,I know that the web is overwhelmed with sites that post movies, many of which havent even made it to the cinema houses yet, still,Retrovision has always done things the legal way and has virtually any and everything available in public domain and somehow,someway..always manages to find some new and interesting nuggets now and again. I have seen most public domain material but because the man who runs this website has been so kind and giving and I want others to be able to run across this site in the future and enjoy the hours of fine LEGAL entertainment. I try to at least visit once or twice a day to give Kevin the hits that are so important to advertising. I hope that you can keep Retrovision going for many years and hope that soon you will get enough money and advertising to even put up some copyright material. I think that because you have done things the right way and have always answered emails and been a very good web site owner/administrator….good things will come to you. I know that I put this same sort of message up from time to time but I just want everyone to know what a cool and interesting site. Keep up the good work Kevin. Peace. Oh yeah, one other thing…if you can give me a banner code..I would gladly put it on my pages..Myspace and YouTube(I have about 800 subscribers on YouTube)to give you a little free advertising..LOL. Just email me the banner and I will get it up. Thanks. I hope everyone keeps supporting the site.
