Edward G. Robinson pursues a nazi war criminal named Franz Kindler. He thinks it’s the kindly college professor played by Orson Welles. Only a dead man can link him to the crimes… or is it his own obsessions that will finally be his undoing. If you haven’t caught this film, this is a keeper in the realm of public domain films.

  1. I saw this film on cable tonight…E.G. Robinson was superb as always. A thriller I had never seen before. Sit back and enjoy the ride…

  2. Last night I watched this amazing piece of art. Welles at his best with the closeups and the long shots that define his style. The ending is a bit too long to my taste.

  3. I think the style finds itself in German impressionist cinematography like all film noir, but Orson Welles does it very well.

  4. No matter how many times I watch The Stranger it’s always suspenseful. The acting was great. The young HG Wells reminded me a little of a young Vincent D’Onofrio. Thanks Kevin. :)

    1. If you ever get a chance, watch “Touch of Evil” with Welles and Heston. It’s not just one of my favorite Orson Welles movies, it’s one of my favorite movies. That’s especially since the DVD release is recut to the way Orson Welles wanted to edit it, not what the studio finally came up with.

This movie is flat scary. You can practically smell Orson Welles as the Evil drunk cop.

    1. That thought came to mind when I was watching The Hobbit. That movie was like watching your little brother hog a video game for 3 hours, with one decent act, the scene with Smeagle.
